Frequently Asked Questions
Q) When did ball players start using gloves?
A) The exact year and player varies, but between 1870 - 1875 gloves started to find there way onto the field. They were first used because the speed and power of the game was increasing and players needed extra padding. By some accounts a catcher was the first to use a glove in response to the faster pitching of the time. Other accounts say that a first baseman was the first to use a glove, which is understandable if you watch anyone play first without a glove.
